Riding on Exmoor

The varied terrain and breathtaking scenery of Exmoor has inspired poets and writers for generations. Our escorted hacks take you through ancient beech forests, along the banks of the river Barle, across open farmland, past standing stones and up onto the moor, 1,500 feet above sea level. Get close to wild red deer and Exmoor ponies and find out why most of our riders and visitors always come back for more!

All of our horses are fit and well schooled and rides are escorted by friendly and experienced guides who know both the horses and the terrain extremely well.

If you fancy a cream tea or lunch before or after your ride then there are some great places to eat in and around Dulverton – or you could stay here in one of our self-catering cottages and make a weekend of it.

Useful Info

WHAT TO WEAR

Riding Hats2022-04-14T13:22:11+01:00

You may bring and wear your own hat as long as it meets current safety standards – PAS 015; ASTM F1163; BSEN 1384; EN1384 and SNELL E2001

If you don’t have a hat we have a large selection available for you to borrow at the farm.

Boots2022-04-14T13:22:49+01:00

The most suitable footwear for riding is a boot with a relatively smooth sole, and a good heel. This means that trainers, slip-on shoes or similar are not suitable. Wellington boots are ok but not ideal. We regret that we are unable to provide boots, but we do have several pairs of half chaps available to give additional comfort if wearing short boots.

Trousers2022-04-14T13:23:14+01:00

Jodhpurs are the most suitable item of clothing for horse riding, as they offer flexibility and are specially designed for riding. If you do not own any jodhpurs then you might find it more comfortable to wear leggings or tracksuit bottoms, as these are more comfortable than jeans, which can rub – particularly if riding for more than one hour

Coats2022-04-14T13:23:32+01:00

The weather on Exmoor is extremely changeable so we advise bringing waterproofs and if riding on a sunnier day perhaps a mac that can be folded up and carried in your pocket. It can be colder and windier on top of the moor than in the valley so make sure you have thought about what you might need and bring it just in case – you can ask your guide for advice on what is most suitable to bring once you arrive for your ride.

Loose Clothing and Jewellery2022-04-14T13:23:58+01:00

If you have loose clothing or jewellery then we advise that you remove them so they do not get caught on low branches and cause an accident. Scarves may be tucked in but dangly earrings and necklaces are not recommended.

RIDER WEIGHT LIMIT

Our weight limit for beginners, novice or lapsed riders is 12 stone (168lbs/76kg) maximum and 14 stone (196lbs/89kg) maximum for intermediate and experienced riders (fit and riding regularly).

This difference is due to the fact that experienced riders sit lightly in the saddle and are able to distribute their weight more evenly than a novice rider can. This weight limit is strict and is for the welfare of our hard-working horses. We regret no longer have any horses large enough to accommodate heavier novice riders. Please make sure that you give your correct weight on arrival. The welfare of our horses is paramount, we have scales in the tack room and we will use them if necessary so please be sure of your weight before you ride.
